London based artist Benjamin C. M. Backhouse's existentialist photographs explore the isolation of the psyche. Wandering the city at night, Backhouse captures eerie scenes of empty streets and abandoned spots - non-places that are overlooked and often transient by nature. Traces of human activity during daytime haunt these deserted spots; like a ghostly vapour this sense of suspense oozes out of his images and fills the room, rendering them poetic in their surreal beauty.
"In my work I explore the nocturnal world and its place in our psyche. I am interested in the lengths at which we go in creating these spaces using artificial lights, only to promptly abandon them for the hospitality of our warm homes. The streets become corridors through which people rush, never pausing long enough to really acknowledge the beauty of their surroundings - beauty that is perhaps found on the proximity of the unknown. As the boundary of the light is reached, our imagination is given full license to create and expand the space indefinitely, a freedom which in itself can be terrifying, particularly when combined with our wide spread love of horror stories. I aim to capture a sense of isolation by allowing the viewer to explore the photographs, and perhaps to empathise with my own isolation when making exposures."
Benjamin C. M. Backhouse graduated from BA Fine Art at Central St Martins College of Art & Design in 2007. In 2008 he was one of the new talents featured in The Shape of Things To Come, an exhibition showcasing top graduates that have emerged from University of the Arts London in the past five years.
